Global Land Nitrogen Budget (N) – Model Intercomparison Project (MIP)

Position 3: Postdoctoral Researcher: Integrated terrestrial-aquatic modeling for the lateral fluxes of sediment, nutrient and carbon
We are seeking a highly motivated and qualified Postdoctoral Researcher to join a cutting-edge, interdisciplinary project aimed at advancing the understanding and prediction of sediment transport, nutrient, and carbon dynamics along the land-ocean aquatic continuum (LOAC). Building upon our previous work on the lateral fluxes of water, nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), carbon (C) and riverine GHG, this project seeks to enhance the simulation of sedimentation processes by integrating process-based land surface and hydrological and sediment transport modeling with machine learning (ML) techniques. The ultimate objective is to support the development of an advanced Decision Support System (DSS) that enables data-driven best management practices for sediment, nutrient, and carbon management. By improving predictions of lateral fluxes across the LOAC, the project will help inform and optimize watershed conservation strategies under both current and future climate and land use conditions.
Required Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in Earth and Environmental Science, Hydrology, Geography, Civil/Environmental Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field (within 5 years after completing the Ph.D.)
  • Demonstrated experience in process-based land surface, or hydrological/watershed modeling, sediment transport modeling or soil erosion processes.
  • Proficiency in computer programming (e.g., Python, MATLAB, C++).
  • Experience with machine learning or GeoAI for environmental systems.
  • Experience with spatial data processing, including GIS and/or remote sensing.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with LOAC systems or biogeochemical cycling across landscape-river-estuary interfaces.
  • Experience developing web-based dashboards or scientific visualization tools.
